DEMAND SIDE ENERGY MANAGEMENT

High Efficiency HVAC Options

The presumption exists that low hanging fruit is also the least expensive option; that is not always the case. For example, those 20 year old + multi-zone package units that are using almost 2 kW per ton are one of the easiest choices, with tremendous returns on investment, but also are more capital intensive to complete.

For Large and Medium sized facilities, that 50 year old chilled water plant is about to give up the ghost, it uses a refrigerant that is obsolete, and its replacement parts have to be manufactured by elves in the North. There are several units by all the major manufacturers of chillers that have tremendous part-load performance, and many have variable speed drives that allow you to virtually dial in the comfort levels and efficiencies you need.

For smaller stores, newer HVAC systems for chiller water loops are able to achieve less than 0.5 kW per ton, and newer package units are getting better than 0.8 kW per ton. You have several options to choose from, and more are under development by the major HVAC manufacturers at this writing.
